If you wonder how we stand among the
best in the world hockey today, well, here's the answer. A 2-6
demolition by Belgium is not a shocking result, mind you, that is if you
have been following the progress of the Belgium team and their wonder boy,
Tom Boon. We did however make a great start by taking a 2-1 lead after
14 minutes. But, that was about everything that we could offer and from
there onward, The Red Lions took charge and if not for some good goal keeping by S.Kumar, we might be looking at a bigger score line.
Our
next match is against England on Thursday and that is another tough
match for us. However, England, despite ranking higher than the Belgian
is not as strong as their European counterpart but still would be too
good for Malaysia. If we can tighten up our defence, we might be able to
snatch a draw from England, perhaps?
Back to Malaysia vs Belgium
match last night, the Belgians were so fast on the breaks and also
defended well in numbers to keep the Malaysians at bay. We did manage to
score two from penalty corners, though. The first one was a well
executed set-piece that completely fooled the Belgian defence, while the
second one was a very good push by Razie Rahim that found the board in
between the Belgium players.
The
second goal should have spurred Malaysian players and put pressure on
Belgium, instead our boys panicked and were too cautious as the Belgians
upped the tempo of the game. Our defence was sliced open by Belgium and Tom Boon
showed why he is highly regarded by scoring four goals for the Red
Lions. His passing game was outstanding while his flicks were so
powerful and always heading toward the top corner. Awesome!
Tanguy
Cosyns and John-John Dohman completed the rout for Belgium and we were
left wondering what might have been had we managed to hold longer after
scoring that second goal.
