In tennis, the word “bagel” is used to refer to when someone loses a set 6-0, and does not win any games at all in a set. So, if someone loses a set 6-0, then he or she is “bagelled”. Hence, when someone win by 6-0, 6-0, it will refer to as "double bagel". Note that the shape of the zero being reminiscent of the round shape of a bagel.
It is not often we see a "double bagel" in a grand slam tournament since the players invited were mostly in top 100 and even when it does happened, it normally in the first or second round when the top four player up against the low rank player. Therefore it was quite astonishing to see how Maria Sharapova inflicted the first "double bagel" of the French Open 2014 when she beat unseeded Argentine Paula Ormaechea (ranked 75 in the world) 6-0 6-0 in the third round on Friday.
Amazingly, Maria Sharapova, the 2013 French Open's losing finalist was forced to save three break points in the rain interrupted first game. But from then on it was one-way traffic with Sharapova devouring the Argentine's serve and despatching winners with ruthless aplomb. She won the match on her first match point when the Argentine hit long. The seventh seed from Russia will play Samantha Stosur of Australia, the 19th seed, in the last 16.
