There are still many good tennis players out there but for me, none are in the same level as the World's Top Two. Therefore, I'm a bit surprised to hear that Novak Djokovic was sent packing by No. 8 seed, Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarter final last night. The Serbian, for the record, hasn’t lost at Melbourne Park since 2010, when he went down to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals. He has been, without a shadow of doubt, the best player on Rod Laver Arena since 2011. But I guess all good things must come to an end. A pity though because I was hoping for a repeat of the titanic clash between Djokovic and Nadal in the final this year. I hope whoever meets Nadal (if he is not toppled as well) will give us another round of high quality tennis match.
With Novak Djokovic out, Rafael Nadal is a clear favourite to win this year to add to his sole Australian Open title way back in 2009. However, with Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych and Stanislas Wawrinka playing well at Melbourne this week, the door is ajar for a potentially new champion. Plus, don't forget the old horse, Roger Federer who looks like he is being revitalised this year under the tutilage of two times Australian Open winner, Stefan Edberg. But, should everyone play to their true form, it is always difficult to look beyond Nadal and Djokovic. With the later already out, this year's tournament is for the former to lose.
Honestly, I'm a big fan of Rafael Nadal. Therefore, I'm a bit biased toward his closest rival, Djokovic, in my assessment. Plus, I always want to see Nadal get the upperhead of Djokovic and win more matches than him. Nonetheless, as a tennis fan, I don't wish to see one of these great players bow out early. For me, Nadal-Djokovic final is a dream finale for any tournament. Just like Nadal-Federer or Connor-McEnroe and Sampras-Aggasi before this. Who can forget the 2012 final when both Nadal and Djokovic fight blow to blow like a heavy weight boxer in that 5 match thriller? I was glued to the seat throughout the match. An entertainment like no other.
However, you can't take anything away from Stanislas Wawrinka. The guy just doesn't give up in his match with Djokovic. He also took his opportunities well and did not crumble under pressure. Even the World No. 2 praised his opponent after the match. The Swiss will face Tomas Berdych in the last four. If he wins it, he will face either one of Nadal, Murray or Federer for the biggest game of his life and a chance to win his first ever grand slam title. Wow!
