Now that Morten Frost and Park Joo Bong are out of the picture, it’s up to BAM to decide whether to approach its former coach, Misbun Sidek to assume the ‘supremo’ role as national coaching director in its structure. Although it is no certainty that Misbun will accept such role having decided to walk out of the national team in 2011, a formal offer should be made by BAM to Misbun before they decide to go for other option. Misbun is, after all, a highly respected coach with a good track record in developing players. Even World No. 1, Datuk Lee Chong Wei has been reported by media is urging BAM to hire his mentor and ex-coach. This was echoed by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who has given the thumbs-up on the proposal for Misbun to appointed on the said post.
Whether there is or no love lost between Misbun and BAM, the former has always found himself at odds with the people inside the association. When he decided to leave BAM in 2011, he said that he was unhappy with several decisions made by the coaching and training committee (CNT) then. In fact, during his tenure as coach at BAM, Misbun has been reportedly at loggerheads with the top brass over several matters and he has also declined a position of quite a similar role not long ago.
However, I don’t really think that BAM have many options and they need to be extra careful after seeing the appointment of Tan Aik Mong as BAM’s Talent Management Group director last year resulted in a total disaster. A supremo must not only have good knowledge of the sport but must also have a good management skill. Above all, he must command respect from all the coaches, staff and players. Although Misbun’s management skill is relatively unknown, the former great is a highly respected and should command respect from others. Hopefully his managing skills are as good as his coaching skill.
It will be interesting to see who BAM will approach in the next few days. My money is on Misbun. But, BAM has sprung plenty of surprises in the past. They could do it yet again. What do you think? Do you think BAM will offer the job to Misbun? Do you think he is the right man for the job?
