I was with a friend the other day, watching his son playing football with his friends at school. Honestly, I was quite impressed with what I saw. Their quality of football, at their age, is definitely better than the kids at a similar age twenty or thirty years ago. Some of the kids are doing tricks that was hardly used when I was a child and they are doing it expertly. Ironically, our national football team did much better in the 80's and 90's compared to now. So, how come when the standard improved, the results are worse?
Obviously it is not the standard of football in this country that has improved. The whole world have found ways to make young footballers better and more skilful than ever. Some of the football I see on TV these days are quite outrageous. The dribbles, the step-overs, the one-twos, the free kicks and the passing are so good that they make me wonder - how on earth can they do that? On top of that, the physical aspect has also improved where players nowadays are capable of covering a distance of more than 10 km per game. Who do we owe this to?
Well, apart from having more systematic coaching system, modern high-tech training facilities and the emergence of top coaches around the world, the influence of TV should not be underestimated.
One thing for sure, TV (and the internet these days) helps disseminate football knowledge all across the world, including Malaysia. Today, young kids are more encouraged to try to hit the ball from a distance after watching their heroes do it for fun on TV. We don't do that often during my time. Kids today are also learning difficult skills such as step-overs and one-twos at a younger age since these skills are more prominently on display compared to twenty and thirty years ago.
As for coaches, they were also getting more quality information on how to improve the standard of the game by watching football shows and listening to pundits analyzing the games during live matches on TV. I really love listening to Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports while over on the Astro Channel we have Jamie Reeves and Abbas Saad who gave great comments and info to TV viewers.
Watching TV also helps footballers push themselves to the limit. When we see some of the skills displayed by the pros, we know that we can no longer work on just the basic skills. The sky is the limit for what humans can do. Just watch The Premier League, The La Liga, The Bundasliga and to a certain extent, The Urban Freestylee Football to learn how much we can do with the ball on our feet. These days you can't simply be satisfied with being able to execute a bicycle kick or scoring from a free kick outside the penalty box. You must do better than that because everyone is getting better.
So, thanks to TV, we not only enjoy more LIVE football today, we can also learn a lot and help improve the standard of the game in this country. So buy yourself a TV if you haven't got one :D . You're gonna need it, especially if you are involved in the development of the game as a coach or teacher at school.
